Kimberly Weston

Often blending a mixture of latin and bossa rhythms with strong balladry, Kimberly Weston deals in a currency that goes beyond love, loss, joy and grief. She peels back the bandages over homelessness, dependency and religious dogma. The heavier issues of a culture that quickly celebrates success but sweeps its failures under the rug nudge Kimberly into a socially conscious envelope and all of that observation and commentary is wrapped in harmony and chord progressions as complex as our humanity.

Kimberly writes her rich, textural originals from a center of experience but also from her imagination and even from current events. Yet, the clarity of her imagination is a remarkable stand-in for life’s more bitter experiences. She dives into American Songbook material as well as standards and contemporary tunes that lend themselves to a wider interpretation than strictly jazz or pop. Inspired by artists like Melody Gardot, Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell and jazz innovators like Herbie Hancock – each of whose material Kimberly interprets with subtle sophistication.
